Vindolanda
Very nice to be immersed in the atmosphere of a huge Roman fortress that stood here for 700 years and has been rebuild at least 7 times. Rich in information. Live excavation going on. Highly recommended.

An excellent display of local area history and artifacts . Wonderful gallery detailing the history of County Durham and surrounding areas during the ages. Great for kids and adults alike. Located in Palace Green Library, with the DLI , Cosins Library and Heritage center and Durham Cathedral over looking the building. Excellent place to visit, with great staff who are very helpful and friendly.

DIG: An Archaeological Adventure
The kids really enjoyed the experience. Our guide was exceptionally good, very knowledgeable and engaging. Staff were all friendly. The centre itself is not that big so good for kids up to 10yrs. There's the dig activity which is an hour and the museum will take 30mins. My kids age 7 and 10 loved it and were engaged the whole way through. They didn't finish the museum as it's not as interactive as the dig but we were there for over 1.5hrs. The ticket is an annual pass so you can always go back.

Vindolanda
Our second visit to Vindolanda, I find it fascinating on how advanced the Romans were. I would advise purchasing the guide book, there are several centuries of occupation on this site and this can make it difficult to interprate, when looking at the remains. There was a live archeology dig at the time of our visit, there are also two living archeology experiments on going in terms of an example of recreated mile castle and wall, both in timber and stone, the museum is breathtaking in terms of finds and their preservation. Well worth a visit.

Museum of Prehistory
Super little museum covering the formation of the gorge, human evolution and development of tools and weapons, cave art and local wildlife. Cheddar man really brought to life and the brown bear skeleton is remarkable. Would highly recommend. The caves ticket covers access to several attractions including the museum.
